Home State Pride...Michigan
By Shelly Johnson

As I travel through the seasons of my life, I find precious memories in each one.  I think of childhood, teen angst, college, career concerns, looking for love, becoming a wife and mother and now, enjoying them all. These memories blend together in my mind like the multi-colored leaves I see on the horizon in this beautiful state called Michigan.

I know first-hand what it’s like to live in other states in the west and south. I’ve been to many parts of the world. Still, my home-state pride re-enforces the impact of places and people that have formed my character. The magical and ever-changing landscapes of Michigan enliven my heart and enrich my life. I’ve decided to stay here, where siblings and family are within driving distance and my childhood roots took hold.

In spring, my pulse races, as I come out of partial hibernation to breath the fresh air and see new flowers popping up around town. Runners, bikers and avenues become busy with activity.

In summer, I gaze upon endless lakes to see my three small children’s reflections in the water laughing, splashing and exploring. I see the boats of families waving to one another as they catch another fish or teach a youngster to water ski. I run till exhaustion up sand dunes to the summit to see that beautiful Lake Michigan, yet again, calling my name and beckoning me to gaze into it’s dark, blue water.

Traverse City cherries fresh, dried or sweetened delight our tables into the fall. Then, football games, hayrides and endless apple orchards bring family fun to weekends. Can I actually make another apple pie? Why not?  Mom’s recipe never fails.

Winter often has a bad wrap from those not raised in its majestic, white beauty. I am one to get out there and experience the Michigan snow, whether skiing, skating or sledding with my kids. There’s a peaceful, dreamy quality about taking a walk in our state in the dead of winter, where crystals of differing snowflakes crunch under your boots and sunlight bounces off of icicle laced oak trees. Children build snow forts for hours, fireplaces are ignited and a cozy cup of hot cocoa warms the heart as well as the body.

Yes, I am a true Michigander and proud of it!!
